Vinod Boolell

Consultant, Former Judge Supreme Court, Former Chief International Judge with the UN - Mauritius

Vinod Boolell holds a law degree from Oxford University and a Maîtrise in French law. After practising at the Bar he joined the Office of the Attorney General and the Director of Public Prosecutions in 1972 where he acted as an adviser to various government departments and as a prosecutor. In 1988 he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court. He has also served as a District Magistrate and as the President of the Industrial Court.

In 2001 he joined the United Nations Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights and was appointed as an adviser to the Supreme Court of Cambodia. In 2003 he was mandated by the International Bar Association to carry out a survey of the legal profession in Cambodia.

From 2002 to 2009 he served as a judge and later Chief International Judge, with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo where he presided over high profile cases relating to war crimes. In Kosovo he also gave lectures to the judges, prosecutors and police officers of the of the European Mission on war crimes, criminal law and procedure In July 2009 he was appointed a judge and president of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal and served in that capacity until June 2016 dealing with employment issues, disciplinary matters and mediation of disputes.

Vinod Boolell has also been the Head of the Law Department at the University of Mauritius where he lectured for fifteen years in various legal topics.
